Wink Technology in new gadget makes computer eye-controlled

Gadgets designed by those who are aimed to make life easier and more interesting for disabled people, sometimes unveil new course for hi-tech industries. The most recent gadget that stands at origin of computing devices for disabled is a latest concept cursor manipulator. This light detector attached to one’s spectacles can act as good as a well-known computer mouse and was designed to substitute it completely. The Wink Technology which is in its core can also be, by the way, very handy to all computer users, probably even entice them all.
Jedlicka Institute for Disabled Children, Czech Republic, has become a domain for the gadget’s developers. To make a computer controllable for handicapped persons, researchers and students of this institute have placed a camera locked close to user’s eye. It is programmed to detect eye’s behavior – left, right, up and down movements, and moments when the eye is closed for calculated periods of time. This was the hardest thing to do as the involved students and other researchers say. The device can not only be eye-controlled, but can also perceive head movements. Data from the detector is sent to a control unit and generated into orders computer will understand. Overall cursor on the monitor receives all the commands and follows the way eyeball shows. Shortly closed eye is interpreted as a click, and prolonged eye closing means a double click for eye-controlled computer. Now gadget is completely useable, makes all the computer and Internet resources manageable and is compatible with any PC model. Device is synchronized via USB host.

Wink Technology is unfortunately not the cheapest one. This eye-controlled cursor manipulator will cost slightly more than 1500 Euros but it was said that government and charitable foundations are willing to cover at least a part of the price for disabled children, because it finally offers them Internet resources and computer experience, which means better education and profitable employment.

Apple has announced iPhone 3G

Advertisers made a good campaign on the next generation of the iPhone. Two guys carrying a meal box into a locked room to get the iPhone 3G out; very neat isn't it? However, what are the main changes they have made to make the iPhone 3G better than the old iPhone? As they said they have made a better GPS service and this is not it and here is the new iPhone 3G review.

It has a 320 x 480 pixels Screen made of harden glass as usual with a very good multi-touch technology built in. "Two times faster and two times cheaper." - The voice in the video says. It is really thinner than the old iPhone and it is better inside. GPS receiver has become much better. It can now gather the information from the cellular towers, Wi-Fi, and GPS itself. With all these possibilities it can now give the drivers directions on the road.

In addition to that it should be twice as fast in web browsing as the old iPhone is. It supports Bluetooth, GPRS, GSM, EDGE, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, UMTS connectivity and that's what they are proud about. One of the biggest news: it will be able to give you 3G video talks with your friends.
One other big news is that Apple is going to allow third party applications on their iPhone but only those that are approved by them. Not sure how popular that will be. Apple has done a pretty good job on the user interface. And the question I have is: "Will the third party applications be free or they are going to charge the customers for that?" The platform it is running on is Mac OS X Mobile which should bring the customers best experiences.

In the rest of features the iPhone 3G will be just as its predecessor (one of the best phones out there.) It will roll out on July the 11th in 70 countries of the world. The 8GB version will cost $199 and the 16GB version will cost $299.

Futuristic Robotic Hands that Mimic Human Movement with Air Muscles!

Once in while there comes a moment in human history when fabled science fiction meets reality or rather reality goes up to meet what was once science fiction. Such moments are few far between but when they do occur they remain etched in our minds and in our civilizations as landmarks that shaped the next era in scientific development. When the dream of H.G.Wells of stepping on the Moon became a reality, it was when we dared to translate the dreams in to reality. It seems modern science will soon create a real vision of the Terminator that was envisioned by James Cameroon in the late 70’s!
Robotic hands have come a long way, in terms of human-like movement. New models by the Shadow Robot Company and Japanese researchers make use of air muscles for realistic motion. Shadow’s impressive robot hand uses air muscles. They are powered by a container of 40 more specifically crafted air muscles to provide fluid, human-like movement. This technology allows direct mapping from a human to the robot. It contracts by up to 40% when actuated with a supply of compressed air.
It is not about just creating an exo-skeleton that mimics the human structure but adding the intricate and delicate movements to it all which ultimately would prove challenging. It seems the Japanese scientists have made enormous progress in this regard. Researchers at Japan’s Ishikawa Namiki Komuro Labs have perfected grasping using high-speed visual feedback. This is all about adding sensitivity and control to form and rigidity. It seems the day we see walking robots who look much more like us than a giant metal piece is not too far away.
